Counter stroke by walking!

Many may think that only old people experience stroke. The fact is, those hit by this sudden disabling attack are now getting younger and younger. I remember a friend who recently passed away at the age of 30 because of stroke. At first glance, you would not think him sick at all.

Usually those at risk are those whose parents have had stroke or heart attack, those aged 55 and above, with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, are smokers or exposed to second-hand smoking, diabetic, overweight, and those with heart disease.

According to the American Stroke Association, there is an increase in number in the younger generation dying of stroke. Here in the Philippines, 1.9% of the population or 63,000 people are dying of stroke every year. Thus, it is very important to know the symptoms for early detection and bring remedy to the problem:

• Paralysis on one side of the body
• Numbness
• Slurred speech
• Sudden nausea and possible vomiting.

Healthy lifestyle is still the best solution to fight off stroke or “the loss of consciousness caused by an interruption in the flow of blood to the brain.” Avoid fast food, eat right and exercise. One way of reducing the risk of stroke by as much as 20% is by walking. According to a study conducted in the US by the Cooper Institute, “walking 5 times a week for 30 minutes a day at a rate of 3 miles per hour (or 120 steps per minute) reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke by 58%.”
